ACTION THROUGH ENTERPRISE is a small, but well established UK-based charity supporting children living in Lawra, rural Ghana where the working population rely on subsistence farming, with long periods of food insecurity. Poor education reinforces the persistent cycle of rural hunger and poverty and in Lawra.
ATE is very successful in helping children to escape this cycle by providing food for almost 1,000 children daily in seven schools, and education materials/uniforms for school education. They also assist with the inclusion of 186 disabled children in education by providing them with the health care, education help, and orthopaedic equipment that they need, together with the raising of awareness and acceptance amongst the community. ATE employs 3 staff in the UK and 30 in Ghana and they have now successfully established community development hubs in 5 rural areas within Lawra and another is already planned. In addition ATE run health & hygiene school workshops for girls, and their community outreach programme supports children who dropped out which sees many of them return to school with profound effect. Overall ATE is providing the means for all of their children to escape the poverty cycle and become far better equipped to earn a living and support their future families. ATE's other activities include an initiative to support 108 small businesses in an education programme to increase household income and includes grants, training, and mentoring through their first year.
BWCF has been very pleased to support ATE since 2020 with both once-off and multi-year grants.
