An estimated 4 million people in the UK have life-threatening food related problems, because they are suffering from Anorexia, Bulimia and Compulsive or 'Binge Eating' disorder. Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of all mental health conditions of 25% and of those surviving about half recover and the rest improve to some degree. tastelife UK is a supportive and educational charity that informs about eating disorders, providing tools for recovery for those who suffer and those who care. It encourages proper understanding of eating disorders in order to prevent them recurring and it ensures that family members, partners, and friends can also become aware of what the sufferer is experiencing, thus enabling them to work directly with the sufferer on a journey to recovery. It achieves much of this through the tastelife UK 8-session community Recovery Course which is non-threatening, educational, and encourages a self-help approach that is highly successful. In addition a special version of the course (called Youth Track) for young people (eg 11-18 years) has been developed for use over 3 sessions by schools and youth groups. The risk of developing an eating disorder is highest for young men and women between 13 and 17 years of age and Youth Track is designed to give young people a better understanding of eating disorders at this early age. The increasing eating disorder prevalence means that support for this age group is vital. Youth Track is a tool to inform young people so that they can engage directly with the truth behind eating disorders, as well as equip them to avoid these damaging behaviours.
The Recovery courses are in great demand and can be run in situ or online and are constantly being enhanced as more information comes to light. There is always a long waiting list of people wanting to join, and a significant part of tastelife's activities is the training of people to run the Recovery courses. The charity was formed in 2014 with the simple aim of getting much more help for recovery from eating disorders to more people, more of the time. It was founded by Di Archer and Jean Hart, two mums who have both had daughters who had eating disorders. The BWCF has been very pleased to support tastelife UK since 2020.
