Founded in 2004 by Sara and David Garland, after the death of their daughter Daisy, The Daisy Garland is a family-run, national, registered charity providing positive support for children with epilepsy and their families/carers.
For more than eight years The Daisy Garland has funded eight specialist trained ketogenic dietitians who work within NHS hospitals countrywide, treating some of the 18,000 children in the UK who suffer from drug-resistant epilepsy. The dietitians initiate and run the ketogenic diet, a medically recognized alternative treatment to anticonvulsant medication. Unfortunately due to lack of NHS funding the ketogenic diet is not widely available in the UK.
The Daisy Garland also provides grants for night-time breathing monitors, comprehensive welcome packs for those starting the diet, as well as one-to-one support for parents/carers, via their website, email and telephone. The picture shows one of the many children supported by The Daisy Garland together with her brother.
Without The Daisy Garland hundreds of these children would be denied the chance of a brighter, drug and seizure free future. The BWCF have been pleased to support The Daisy Garland since 2010 and are currently implementing a five year award to assist The Daisy Garland continue their essential work helping children with epilepsy to reach their full potential.
