DEBRA provides EB research, treatment and care of EB sufferers. EB is a collective term for a genetic group of inherited conditions in which the skin blisters at the slightest knock or rub. A high percentage of victims are children (the "Butterfly" children).
The mildest forms of EB affects hands and feet, more severe forms affect the whole body. Wounds heal very slowly, giving rise to very painful scarring, deformity and disability, with a high risk of skin cancer shortening lives by 30-50 years. The most severe forms are fatal in infancy.
Jonny Kennedy's death (Channel 4) showed the world how brave EB sufferers have to be. Since 2002 the BWCF have made significant contributions to DEBRA's ongoing genetic research.
