Thomas Theyer was diagnosed at school as having Dyspraxia and Attention Deficit Disorder, which caused, among other things, motor skills issues. To help Thomas he undertook various daily exercises and in his early teens he started running with a local running club. Thomas's family recognised the significant mental and physical benefits he derived from exercise and the outdoors and after Thomas died, at the age of 18 in 2013, they set up this charity to provide other young people, like Thomas, with similar opportunities including those with Special Education Needs (SEN), and those with other difficult life circumstances (e.g. bereavement, young carers, extreme stress/anxiety scenarios, etc). Today TTF provides access to outdoor activities to various beneficiary groups, together with mental health support through counselling and therapeutic services. They also provide signposting advice and guidance to enable access to appropriate support for children throughout education and employment opportunities. Their goal is to help young people with these disadvantages to become much more confident, experience team building, and maximise their potential. To date TTF have provided outdoor activities for over 400 children and over 1200 funded counselling sessions for children, together with additional sessions for parents. Both functions are extremely well received and are continually in high demand and the BWCF has been very pleased to provide a multi-year grant towards the costs of their services.
