Hop Skip & Jump was established in February 2003 as a special place for children with life threatening illnesses, or any special need, and their families Hop Skip & Jump's play and support centre is located in Bristol, predominantly visited by families and other charities throughout Bath & North East Somerset, Wiltshire, Bristol, Gloucestershire and further afield throughout the South West. Provided as a free service, the charity relies on donations to raise the £200,000 needed each year to keep the vital centre running. The centre, built as a giant log cabin, with large play areas both indoors and out, provides respite for families and carers whilst the children develop with the help of special Play Leaders who focus on nurturing their skills to the best of the child’s abilities. With light, dark and soft play sensory rooms, as well as arts and crafts, the centre uses special equipment for children with mental or physical disabilities and in some cases both.
The charity aims to improve the quality of life for children with disabilities by building their confidence, social skills and self esteem through freedom of adventure, play, open spaces, fun and laughter.
In July 2008 The Barbara Ward Children’s Foundation agreed to fund Hop Skip & Jump's Team Leader position for three years with a donation of £11,998 per year.
