The Ear Foundation

Deafness in childhood can have a devastating impact on communication and language and educational attainment. Deaf children, whatever technology they may use, find it hard to participate in a hearing world but, with the exciting hearing technologies available today, the opportunity exists to change the outcomes for deaf children.

The Ear Foundation is a Nottingham based charity that supports children, young people and their families to ensure they make the best use of hearing technologies, such as cochlear implants and digital hearing aids, to improve communication and spoken language. They do this through their:

  • Family Programme - supporting deaf children and their families to learn to listen, build communication skills and develop spoken language.
  • Clinical Services - educating and guiding deaf children and their families to make the most of their hearing technology at home and school.
  • Education Programme - training professionals working with deaf children and young people in the latest hearing technologies and how to support deaf children to reach their potential.
  • Research Programme – researching important issues related to deafness and using the findings to influence policy and practice.

The Ear Foundation have received ongoing support from the Barbara Ward Children's Foundation with a grant for a programme for young deaf people aged between 11-18 years old. The programme delivers sessions and activities that young deaf people engage with while subtly learning how to develop their communication skills, meet others with the same challenges and increase their confidence and self-esteem.
